Altor of Down
About
Altor is a 1991 Moody 44, designed by Bill Dixon and built by Moody Yachts in Plymouth, England. Constructed from fiberglass with a fin keel and skeg-hung rudder, she is a proven bluewater cruiser with a reputation for strength, comfort, and seaworthiness. Mark purchased Altor in late 2017 from a couple who had owned her since she was three years old. She was based in Bangor, Northern Ireland, where she spent many years cruising the Irish Sea and the west coast of Scotland.

Her previous owners had cherished her for many years, but eventually the time came for them to hang up their sailing boots. That was when Mark took on this classically styled Moody — a dependable middle-aged lady who needed a little care, a few upgrades, and some encouragement to shine again. In the past, Mark had often been drawn to feisty, high-maintenance performance boats built more for speed than for comfort. But with experience came a new perspective, and he found in Altor the reliable, comfortable, and steady companion he had been seeking. Together, they make a perfect match.

Altor of Down is our trusted companion in our adventures. Her warm, classic wooden interior offers a cosy home, while her elegant yet strong hull exudes quiet confidence. She has carried us through gales and shared starlit anchorages with us.
She sails beautifully — on all points of sail — finding that mystical groove that you can’t quite describe, but know the moment you’re in it! We’ve weathered many storms together and Altor has given us shelter, safety and confidence.
For four years we lived aboard full-time. She has carried us across vast waters to distant places. Together, we’ve explored remote fjords, danced with dolphins, whales, watched sunrises and moonrises reflected in still water.
We take care of her and she takes care of us.
This mutual devotion — this bond — makes her so much more than a boat. She is our portal to adventure and freedom.
